Machu Picchu operates a strict visitor management system that has become significantly more regulated in recent years. Daily visitor numbers are capped, entry is divided into specific time slots, and the citadel itself is divided into separate circuits that visitors must follow in a defined direction. Understanding this system before you book your ticket is not optional. It is the difference between a smooth, well-planned visit and arriving at the gate to discover that the time slot you wanted sold out three weeks ago.<\/p>

The good news is that once you understand how it works, navigating the system is straightforward.     Machu Picchu is divided into four visitor circuits, each covering a different combination of areas within the site. All four circuits begin and end at the main entrance gate and follow a one-way path through their respective sections. You cannot move freely between circuits once inside.<\/p>

    Circuit 1<\/strong><\/p>

    The most comprehensive circuit and the one that covers the greatest area of the site. Circuit 1 takes visitors through the agricultural terraces on the lower levels of the citadel, up through the urban sector including the Temple of the Sun, the Royal Tomb, the Main Plaza, and the Intihuatana stone, and out through the upper agricultural terraces with views over the Urubamba canyon. This circuit offers the widest range of architectural and historical areas and the most varied perspective of the site. Duration approximately 2 to 3 hours.<\/p>

    Circuit 2<\/strong><\/p>

    A shorter version of Circuit 1 that covers the main urban sector of the citadel including the iconic viewpoint, the Temple of the Three Windows, the Main Plaza, and the Intihuatana stone, without descending to the lower agricultural terraces. This is the circuit most commonly seen in photographs of Machu Picchu and the one that provides the classic panoramic view of the site with Huayna Picchu in the background. Duration approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.<\/p>

    Circuit 3<\/strong><\/p>

    This circuit focuses on the agricultural section of the citadel and the lower terraces, providing excellent views of the full urban sector from below and a different perspective on the engineering and scale of the agricultural systems the Inca built into the mountainside. Circuit 3 is less visited than Circuits 1 and 2 and offers a quieter experience with more space and time at each area. Duration approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.<\/p>

    Circuit 4<\/strong><\/p>

    The shortest circuit and the one that follows the perimeter path along the lower edge of the citadel, offering panoramic views of the agricultural terraces and the surrounding mountains without entering the main urban sector. Circuit 4 is suitable for visitors with limited mobility or time and for those who want a broader perspective of the site from the outside rather than a detailed exploration of the interior.       Each circuit is available in two time slots: morning entry between 6:00 AM and 12:00 PM, and afternoon entry between 12:00 PM and 5:30 PM. Morning entry is consistently more popular and sells out further in advance, particularly during the high season between May and October. The morning light is better for photography and the site is at its most atmospheric in the early hours when the mist is still moving through the ruins.<\/p>

        Machu Picchu entrance tickets must be purchased in advance and are registered to the passport number of each individual visitor. They are non-transferable and non-refundable. Rangers check passports at the entrance gate and will not allow entry if the name or passport number on the ticket does not match the document presented.<\/p>

        During peak season, which runs roughly from June through August and during the weeks around major holidays, morning time slots for the most popular circuits can sell out four to six weeks in advance. We strongly recommend confirming your tour dates as early as possible to secure the ticket you want.<\/p>

        Tickets are purchased by our team as part of the booking process. To do this we need your full name exactly as it appears on your passport, your passport number, your date of birth, and your nationality.
