The Inca Jungle Extended was designed for travelers who want to go deeper. It follows the same spectacular route as the Classic tour but adds a full extra day in the cloud forest, giving you more time on the trail, a more immersive experience in the ecosystems you are passing through, and a more relaxed arrival in Aguas Calientes before your Machu Picchu visit. If you are not in a rush, this is the way to do it.<\/p>

The five-day format allows the journey to breathe. Instead of pushing through the forest at pace, you have the time to stop, look around, and actually absorb what you are moving through. The cloud forest between the Andes and the Amazon basin is one of the most biodiverse environments on earth, and an extra day inside it changes the experience entirely.<\/p>

      Departure from Cusco early in the morning. The group travels by private vehicle along one of the most scenic roads in the southern Andes, climbing steadily through the Sacred Valley and past the high-altitude wetlands where Andean geese and vicu\u00f1as graze at the edge of glacial lakes. The drive takes approximately two hours and already begins to tell you something about the scale of the landscape you are entering.<\/p>

      At Abra M\u00e1laga Pass, sitting at 4,350 meters above sea level, the vehicle stops and the bikes come out. The air here is cold and the views in every direction are enormous. On clear mornings you can see the snow-covered peaks of the Urubamba mountain range to the north and the beginning of the forest that will swallow you within the first hour of riding.<\/p>

      The descent covers approximately 65 kilometers of paved and semi-paved mountain road. It is not a technical trail and there is no off-road riding involved, which makes the experience accessible to anyone who is comfortable on a bicycle and happy to follow the pace set by the guide. Within the first 20 kilometers the landscape shifts dramatically, the temperature begins to rise, and the vegetation thickens on both sides of the road. By the halfway point you are riding through full cloud forest, surrounded by tree ferns, bromeliads, and the constant sound of water running somewhere off the road.         The morning of Day 2 starts with breakfast and a short transfer to the put-in point on the Urubamba River. The section used for rafting sits at roughly 1,400 meters and offers Class III rapids, genuinely active but fully manageable for anyone who listens to the safety briefing and works as a team in the raft. The rafting section lasts approximately two hours on the water. During calmer stretches between rapids, the canyon walls rise on both sides and the vegetation overhangs the river.<\/p>

        After the river, the group continues on foot through a forest trail that runs parallel to the Urubamba, covering approximately 8 kilometers over gentle terrain. The path moves through secondary cloud forest where the guide explains the local ecology, the medicinal plants used in this region, and the relationship between these lower forests and the agricultural systems the Inca built higher up the valley.<\/p>

        The afternoon ends at the Cocalmayo Hot Springs, a series of natural thermal pools fed by volcanic activity beneath the Andean range. The water sits between 35 and 40 degrees Celsius and the pools are surrounded by cloud forest. Most groups spend one to two hours here before continuing to Santa Teresa for the night.<\/p>

Rather than pushing straight through to Aguas Calientes, the group spends a full day moving slowly through the most biodiverse section of the entire route. The trail enters primary cloud forest where the canopy closes above the path, the humidity rises with every step, and the sense of being genuinely deep in the wilderness becomes impossible to ignore.<\/p>

          Your guide takes real time here. Stops are frequent and unhurried. The ecology of the cloud forest, the medicinal and edible plants that grow along the trail, the bird species that exist only in this narrow altitude band, and the Andean relationship with this landscape that predates the Inca themselves all become part of the day. There is no rush to get anywhere. The only objective is to be present in one of the most remarkable natural environments on the continent.<\/p>

            A shorter and more relaxed hiking day that follows the final section of the cloud forest trail down to the hydroelectric station and then along the railway line into Aguas Calientes. The walk alongside the river as it narrows into the final canyon before the citadel is one of the most scenic parts of the entire route, and having already covered the most demanding terrain the day before, today feels like a well-earned reward.<\/p>

            The group arrives in Aguas Calientes with enough afternoon remaining to explore the town, visit the local artisan market, soak in the town hot springs, or simply rest before the big day ahead.               The alarm goes early. The bus to Machu Picchu departs from Aguas Calientes beginning at 5:30 AM, and there is a real advantage to being among the first through the gate. The 25-minute ride climbs the switchback road up the forested mountainside, and as the gate opens and the morning mist begins to lift, the citadel reveals itself in a way that no photograph adequately prepares you for.<\/p>

              The guided visit lasts approximately two hours and covers the main areas of the site: the agricultural terraces, the urban sector with its temples and royal residences, the Intihuatana stone that served as an astronomical calendar, the Temple of the Sun, and the iconic viewpoint over the classic panorama of the site. After the guided section you have free time to explore independently, revisit areas that caught your attention, or simply sit in silence and let the place settle over you.<\/p>

              Machu Picchu sits at 2,430 meters, enclosed by forested mountains that drop sharply on three sides into river valleys far below. The scale of the place and the silence that settles over it between the groups of visitors is something that stays with most people long after the photographs fade.                                       The Briefing<\/strong><\/p>

                                      The night before your departure, your guide will meet the group for a briefing at our Cusco office. This is where you receive final instructions, check your equipment, ask any last questions, and confirm your pickup time and meeting point for the following morning. Details of the location will be sent with your booking confirmation.<\/p>

                                      Luggage Storage<\/strong><\/p>

                                      During the trek your main luggage can be stored securely at our Cusco office or at your hotel. You only need to carry a daypack on the trail.<\/p>

                                      Your Passport<\/strong><\/p>

                                      Your original passport is required throughout the entire tour. The passport number must match exactly what was provided at the time of booking. Rangers check passports at the entrance to Machu Picchu and the train company verifies your identity before boarding. If you are renewing your passport or changing your name after booking, contact us immediately. A change fee of $25 USD per person applies and copies of both old and new passports are required.<\/p>

                                      Can I Change My Departure Date?<\/strong><\/p>

                                      Once Machu Picchu entrance tickets have been purchased, the government does not allow date changes. Tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable. Please contact our team as early as possible if your plans change. The deposit is non-refundable in the event of cancellation.<\/p>

                                      Cancellation Policy<\/strong><\/p>

                                      Cancellations made more than 30 days before departure receive a full refund minus the deposit and any booking fees. Cancellations between 15 and 30 days before departure receive a 50 percent refund of the land cost. Cancellations within 14 days of departure are non-refundable. We strongly recommend travel insurance that covers trip cancellation.<\/p>

                                      Weather and What to Expect<\/strong><\/p>

                                      The Inca Jungle route passes through several microclimates in a single day. Conditions change rapidly and can be difficult to predict. Day 1 begins in cold Andean air and ends in warm humid jungle. Rain is possible at any time of year. Layered clothing, a waterproof jacket, and good rain gear are essential on every departure. On Day 3 in the deep cloud forest, rain is more frequent and the trail can be muddy. Waterproof boots are strongly recommended for the Extended tour.<\/p>

                                      Drop-off After the Trek<\/strong><\/p>

                                      On the final day of the tour you will be taken directly to your hotel in Cusco. If you are staying in the Sacred Valley, Ollantaytambo, or Urubamba, we will drop you there as well.<\/p>

                                      Tipping<\/strong><\/p>

                                      Tipping is not compulsory but is genuinely appreciated by the guides and support staff who make your experience possible. It is a meaningful part of the local tourism economy and a direct way to recognize excellent service. The amount is entirely at your discretion.<\/p>

                                                How is the Extended different from the Classic tour?<\/strong> The main difference is Day 3. Instead of moving directly from Santa Teresa to Aguas Calientes in a single long hiking day, the Extended adds a full day in the deepest section of the cloud forest with a mid-point overnight. This breaks the most demanding hiking into two more manageable days, gives you far more time in the most biodiverse part of the route, and means you arrive in Aguas Calientes rested and ready for Machu Picchu.<\/p>

                                                Do I need experience to ride the mountain bike on Day 1?<\/strong> No. The descent follows a paved and semi-paved road rather than a technical off-road trail. If you can ride a bicycle with basic confidence and are comfortable with speed on a downhill road, you will enjoy it. The guide sets a pace that the whole group can follow and it is always possible to slow down or stop.<\/p>

                                                Is the rafting on Day 2 dangerous?<\/strong> The rafting section involves Class III rapids, active and exciting but fully appropriate for beginners with no prior experience. All participants receive a thorough safety briefing before entering the water, the equipment meets international standards, and a certified rafting guide is in the raft at all times.<\/p>

                                                What level of fitness is required?<\/strong> The tour is rated moderate to challenging. Days 3 and 4 involve the most hiking but the Extended format spreads the distance across two days, making it more accessible than the Classic for travelers who prefer a steadier pace. Good general fitness is enough.<\/p>

                                                Can I do this tour during the rainy season?<\/strong> Yes. The route runs year-round. The wet season between November and March produces the most vivid and lush version of the cloud forest. The trail can be muddy on Days 3 and 4, so waterproof hiking boots and a good rain jacket are essential during this period.<\/p>
